Track 1- Golden

Bri's take-

"HEY!" After the first few quiet trickling sounds coming in through the speakers, this song immediately brings you in and makes you feel at home. The song says it all, it is golden. The sound of the track is golden, it sounds like that ray of light that comes down onto your face and warms your soul. It instantly lifts you into euphoria and gives you a sense of freedom. Almost instantaneously you start to dance even if it's just a subtle rolling of the shoulders or bopping of the head. This track has simply intricate layers of sounds that pull the ears and bend the heartstrings; it is quite simply a track that instantly perks up the mind and leaves you anticipating what is to come. There are elements of classic light rock that you might hear in a Fleetwood Mac track like Gypsy or Dreams, and it begs to be played on repeat and to be blasted from a vintage VW bus adorned with flower bumper stickers while driving down the coast as the sun sets over the ocean.

Alongside the instrumentation and production of the song are the actual lyrics. The lyrics of Golden speak on another level, they share a story of pure adoration which is also tainted by doubt. This is a track that is easily relatable, as everyone at some point has felt, "hopeless, broken" and "I don't wanna be alone" is a universal feeling, especially for the hopeless romantic.

Golden is none other than the perfect first track on the Fine Line album, it gives the first taste of how universal the album is in its reach. It perfectly opens the door for Harry to continue to be vulnerable and shows how emotions are often clouded by other emotions.

Liv's take-

“To do a dull thing with style…” Never has there been a more perfect opener. From the first beat, Golden sends a chill down your spine and puts pressure in your chest. For those who hear it on the radio, it will be a song that you get stuck in your head for the rest of the day, and for those like us who live and breathe Fine Line, you can’t help but jump around screaming the lyrics with tears streaming down your face. The beautiful instrumentation of Golden is just part of how it draws your heart to it. It has a sound that seems almost cinematic, making you want to drive down the coast at sunset with the top down while the wind blows your hair in every direction but the way it’s supposed to. The instrumental bridge leaves you unable to do anything but sit in contemplation, wondering how anyone could create something so hauntingly beautiful. It’s rare to find a song like it nowadays.

And while the music makes you feel like you’re unable to do anything but jump around to the beat, the lyrics dig at your heart. To me, Golden is about the fear of falling in love. Finding that person who is absolutely wonderful and golden, but they’re scared, “I don’t want to be alone, you’re so golden”, about how they better you and how you’d do anything to have them.

Golden is the perfect intro to the album, introducing the prospect of being open, “I know that you’re scared because I’m so open”, and leaves us wanting more. Which is exactly what he gives us.
