“Don’t blame me for falling, I was just a little boy…” Starting with the strum of a ukulele sounding similar to the ringing of a phone, To Be So Lonely breaks our heart from the first note. What happens when you realize the reason the one you love went away is because of you? Because of your own tendencies and jealousy? Do you make excuses or do you wallow in the knowledge that it’s because of you? To Be So Lonely much like the last track is about the questioning and blaming that takes place after a relationship has ended. Though Falling focuses more on how Harry feels about it, To Be So Lonely is about what he did wrong and how he doesn’t blame the person for their choice, “Don’t call me baby again, you got your reasons”.
To Be So Lonely helps us to realize our own faults and how at times they can push people away. Having your own imperfections as your only company can create a very lonely environment. Loneliness can cause us to do rash things, drunk calling, jealousy, begging. Only to realize that being an “arrogant son of bitch who can’t admit when he’s sorry” isn’t the way to win someone back. Then to try everything in your power to hope they’ll see you “in a little better light”.
Loneliness is human. Everyone has felt so lonely at some point in their life, whether it be because of their own doing or someone else’s. But it’s what we choose to do with that loneliness and self-discovery that determines whether we will feel that way forever.
All this to say, justice for To Be So Lonely.
Bri’s take-
It’s hard to explain why, but this song is addictive. Maybe it's the message of feeling alone as you face the end of a relationship or maybe it's the staccato-sounding strumming of the ukulele and the heavy percussion. Either way, there is an easy groove to To Be So Lonely which can’t be denied. To Be So Lonely tells a heartbreaking story of how sometimes falling in love with someone feels like fate, but when the love gets rejected and isn’t reciprocated it can make the worst come out of you and cause you to want to cut all ties from that person and not accept any responsibility for the end of a relationship.
To Be So Lonely shows the dark side of what it can feel like to fall in love and how loneliness is a universal feeling. This track shows how we all face moments of doubt and feels a need to displace the blame onto someone else even if you had faults in the situation. Loneliness is one of the worst feelings someone can have and it can evoke careless actions like drunk calling someone and begging them for a second chance and hoping that after everything they can forget everything. This track speaks directly to those who feel helpless and just wish to be seen, “in a little better light,” even if they are an “arrogant son of a bitch who can’t admit when he’s sorry.”
To Be So Lonely is purely a relatable song that shows that we all have those moments where we are just lonely and jealous and that it's alright to feel lonely and face the feeling of resentment. It also shows us that you can’t control who you fall for and that it might end in tears and screams and wishing you could just take back every wrong thing you did, but that in the end it wasn’t all for not and the pain won’t last forever.
